Brewers Fayre

This pub belongs to the Whitbread chain Brewers Fayre, but it has existed as a public pub for about 200 years. It is a most picturesque setting and the pub is surrounded by a manicured beer garden and children's play area. This chain of pubs tends to be more geared towards eateries that drinking holes, however there is a warm and friendly atmosphere and the staff are bright and cheerful. They stock a very varied bar and their real ales are Flowers and Castle Eden.

The Royal Oak is a grade II listed building dating from the 18th and early 19th century. It is redbrick and weatherboarded with a red tile roof. Between 1922 -1965 the pub was managed by Gertie (nee Giddens) Andrews. They were locally famous along with Gertie's mother Susan Giddens for the greyhound racing. In 1932 Susan's Greyhound Dashing Pimpo won the Daily Mirror Trophy at Harringay.

Directions:
Exit at junction 8 on the A1M and take the A602 to Hitchin. Before reaching Hitchin take a left turning 2.5 miles from the junction on the B656 to Codicote. Continue in this road and travel for 3.5 miles. The pub is on the right hand side.
