Watery
Grove
This
is part of the Knebworth Woods site of special scientific interest which boarders
the expansion area. The woodland is of a nationally rare type. Almost all
of it is ancient resting on poorly drained acidic soils. Around watery grove
the traditional practice of coppicing the hornbeam has returned. This allow
woodland flowering plants like primrose and bugle enough light. The ponds
in Knebworth woods have two plant species that are rare in Hertfordshire:
the water violet and the fine leafed water dropwort
